Musings on A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones

Minor spoilers for A Song of Ice and Fire (books) and Game of Thrones (HBO series). (Okay, one is more than a minor spoiler. Read at your own risk.)

Things we know about Westeros:

  • It consists of seven “kindgoms,” ruled by a hereditary monarch.
  • When the last Targaryen king, Aerys II, died, only two heirs remained: Danys and Viserys Targaryen.
  • Viserys is now dead, too.
  • In “giving birth” to her dragons, Dany is now barren — she cannot have children.

Even if she manages to win back the Iron Throne, what happens when she dies? Does Westerosi tradition allow a monarch to adopt an heir? If not, would the realm accept such an arrangement? Or does Dany win, die, and Westeros plunges right back into chaos? Then again, she could always marry Young Griff. (I warned you about spoilers.)

Something tells me GRRM would find either prospect delightfully in keeping with the series.

This all assumes anyone survives Winter…
